Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by Zachary S — 07 May 2010
Vulgar and pretentious, â??La Pianisteâ?? is one of those films in the class regarded highly among those who mistake style for substance and are willing to blindly disregard the vapid emptiness of a storyline when they are presented by some minute form of artistry, which entrances them so profusely that they are unable to comprehend the immense faults, which should otherwise be apparent to anyone with a functioning brain, in such a film.
Critics will love it because it is unconventional, but nonetheless, it remains that the film is surprisingly weakly developed and poorly directed. Characters are isolated from the viewer and even, dare I say, from themselves.
Because of this, all acting becomes irrelevant, as any attempt to enter the characterâ??s mind would be futile, and thus irrelevant. Overall, this film will please many, and confound the rest, but for those of us who are not easily influenced by the ostentatious words of critics, who have no more capabilities which incline them to better judgments than anyone else, will find the piece revoltingly vacuous and unremarkable.
