Review of The Piano (1993) by Alistair N — 02 Mar 2008
Few films sound and look as beautiful as this one, nor do they contain such a cryptic central character, whose inability to communicate with those around her is matched only by her inability to understand her own desires.
Combining gothic violence with a poetic almost metaphorical air, this film deserves to be remembered as a challenging (and erotic) classic. Performances from all four of the leads (Hunter and Paquin won oscars) are sublime and its not hard to see why Campion has struggled to make anything that can match this.
