Review of The Piano (1993) by Jim S — 11 Aug 2008
Brave performancs, beautiful, wonderful to listen to and watch. A real movie about love, society, communication. Full of atmosphere and tension. At the heart of it is the relationship between the maverick individual harvey keitel and the mute repressed holly hunter, on the one hand, and the arranged marriage between holly and her emotionally muted husband.
A fantastic historical setting and amusing minor characters add life to the romantic drama. A couple of stunning and highly dramatic set pieces make give a chiller / edge to put trad modern bunny boiler movies to shame.
It's a complex, genre-busting, adult, artistic love story.
