Review of The Piano (1993) by Cham O — 08 Dec 2010
Campion should have left out Ada's interior monologue's at the beginning and end, and her sign language (not approriate for the time I don't think), should not have been translated. If she was supposed to be mute, she should have been.
If Campion wanted to give us motivation, she should have done, rather than give us just enough to be utterly confused and to have had the possibility of understanding taken away not by the cirucumstances of the of the film, but by the whim and pretension of the director.
