Considering this has a reputation for being a dour, arty Serious Movie I was surprised at how much of the script is peppered with attempts at levity. It's never funny, but it's certainly not the misery porn it could have been (though it does veer awkwardly in that direction towards the end, to its detriment.
You know the scene I'm talking about.) Not everything works, but it's very beautiful, and the music's amazing.
