Review of The Pianist (2002) by Nathan E — 28 Jul 2011
Very confronting. This film shows the horrific and humiliating treatment of the Jewish in Warsaw at the hands of the Germans during the war, and one man's fight to survive. There is no sensationalizing - just the cold and graphic presentation of merciless brutality against the frail, aged and children, shot in no-frills style, often from static high and low angles without any wizardry but with a clarity that makes for disturbing viewing.
By the end of the 2+ hour-long film the viewer is left with a real grasp for what it must have been like to be in danger just because of who you are. Fairly powerful stuff, though tedious in places.
