A subdued film of great emotional power, proving that a subject can be tackled in a way that isn't overtly preachy but while speaking certain truths that need to be said aloud. Adrien Brody gives a wonderful performance as Szpilman and blends in to the somber tone of the film, which does explode with some shocking and powerful scenes of both beauty and anguish.

Polanski's style from his earlier films is largely missing, instead giving a more conventional view but the frame is still wonderfully composed and the pacing despite a slow-ish middle is just about right.

The production design of Warsaw is magnificent and it really makes the period come alive with precise detail and lush broad strokes. Recommended viewing.
