Review of The Pianist (2002) by Paul B — 01 Aug 2014
Unsympathetic and remarkably blunt, The Pianist is an immaculately framed achievement that relies heavily on its sheer visual power to winning ends for the most part. Polanski's detached treatment of the material simultaneously aids and hinders the project, as it gives us a sober minded representation of the events as they unfold, though I can't help but imagine what this project could have been had it been made more personal, allowing us to witness the outcome of a man physically and psychologically stripped of humanity in the face insurmountable evil.
It's undeniable brilliant though slightly unsatisfying.
