Review of The Philadelphia Story (1940) by Ricardo O — 15 Feb 2011
The Philadelphia Story is a classic screwball comedy with a dream cast featuring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart in the lead roles. The script is witty, often hilarious, and full of great lines throughout.
It is sublimely directed by George Cukor, the master of the screwball comedy. Cary Grant is great being, well...Cary Grant. Katharine Hepburn, giving one of her absolute best performances, is fantastic in the role that was written directly for her.
James Stewart is especially magnificent as the Spy magazine reporter Macauley Connor who becomes smitten with Hepburn's Tracy. The scenes where he is drunk and speaking with Cary Grant are especially funny.
This film easily ranks as one of the best romantic comedies ever made. I truly love this movie! 10/10.
