Review of The Philadelphia Story (1940) by *Jessica* W — 26 Feb 2008
Excellent romantic comedy with a touch of class conflict thrown in ... but only a touch. It was a comedy after all, not a manifesto. Your chance to see Jimmy Stewart be really funny. (WWII changed him a bit, as did Anthony Mann.
) Grant is quite the wit as C.K. Dexter Haven, and Hepburn is lithely luminous as the oh-so virtuous Tracy Lords. In other words, she's frigid, but they couldn't say that in 1940 in film, so Grant calls her a goddess--that's code for virginesque--even though they were married for a couple of years.
Don't worry, a couple of drinks fix her up towards the end of the pic, and she runs back into ... oops, almost gave away the ending.
