Review of The Philadelphia Story (1940) by Kiera M — 01 Sep 2010
The Philedelphia Story is at the pinnacle of romantic comedies. It's shockingly real, especially in a time like the 1940s when idealism and melodrama were at some of their highest points. There aren't tons of films from then that are still perfect game for good laughs-- the script shows fantastic wit and loads of classic lines. ("The course of true love ...gathers no moss.").
The film surprised me several times: Katherine Hepburn's character actually had a bit of depth and complexity, the story kept me guessing until the end, and the fact that I was laughing throughout. I must give kudos to Cary Grant-- he was a hilarious nuisance. I've been looking for a good rom-com to shamelessly re-watch over and over again and I think I've found my match.
