I kinda understand why this movie gets mixed reviews from movie critics but ravings from its DVD collectors .It's not the adrenaline pumping, suspense popping, twists tangling ,your typical fast paced Hollywood roller coaster ride that people normally expect for $12+ popcorn and soda cost.
The age old Gothic storyline has been adapted and copied for a century, but this adaption is as updated as it could be.The original book is rather loosely organized and the story line is tacky from the perspective of contemporary readers(it's kindle version is free to download for a reason).
This movie is made with Andrew Webber-the English composer, not exactly tailored for American audience that would go for bold gruffy looking adventure stories but not pretty melodrama, not to mention opera.
The fact that overseas box office grossed twice as much as domestic market spoke for it.All of these spectacular scenes, fine costumes, beautified music, classic romance (all crimes in the eyes of movie critics)make this movie a timeless piece to collect.
Unlike some big Hollywood productions on DVDs, you will probably watch the DVD once and put away after the suspense wears out, this musical you just can't get enough of it.
