Rossum makes Christine seem even more submissive and vacant than I thought was possible, and the fashionably scarred and disappointingly flat Gerard turns the character of the Phantom into an object of some absurd (and unhealthy) fettish.

However, this film introduced me to a musical I would come to adore, so I can't entirely hate it. Plus, Sarah Brightman is nowhere to be seen or (most thankfully) heard, so that gives it a big plus in my books.
