Review of The Phantom of the Opera (1925) by Nate W — 20 Nov 2008
Decades before this tragic tale would be immortalized on the Broadway stage, Rubert Julian crafted this stunning adaptation of Leroux's famed novel. The sets and costumes are lavish and spectacular, the photography is a brilliant dance of light and shaddow, and Lon Chaney achieves more with a simple hand gesture than any actor could have with the wordiest of dialogue.
The restored edition features an appropriate soundtrack by Carl Davis, who manages to sneak in a few familiar notes from Andrew Lloyd Weber's Broadway score.
