Review of The Phantom Carriage (1921) by Bill M — 22 May 2009
Griffith had to argue that audiences would even "understand" a flashback, yet by '20, Sjostrom constructed this incredibly intricate series of frames. I hope filmmakers today can shrug off the accumulated decades of conventions and finally embrace how much content the 21st century viewer can process at once and explode the frame yet again.
