Review of The Phantom Carriage (1921) by Ken S — 07 Jul 2015
Silent film from Sweden about a man who has lived his life as a bad man, drinking too much, neglecting his family, and acting like a real jerk. When he is killed on New Years Eve, the last man to die in the year, he is being asked to take on the mantle of being Death's Driver.
The horse and carriage are always the same, but the last man to die each year must bear the burden of this task. The special effects look cool, but don't let the premise mislead you, this isn't so much a horror film as it is more like "A Christmas Carol" or "It's a Wonderful Life".
..not that it is a Christmas film, but that it uses some dark themes and ghostly details to tell a morality tale and about learning from past mistakes and realizing there is still time to change.
