Review of The Petrified Forest (1936) by Roberto L — 05 Dec 2007
No stars: Leslie Howard as the irritating world-weary aesthete; most contrived writing in the whole play. Evidently he owned the rights to the play, so he got to star in it -- stage and film versions.
Four stars: Bette Davis, at 28, as the Villon-reading ingenue.
Five stars: Humphrey Bogart as Duke Mantee -- menacing, tightlipped, badass. This was his breakthrough movie role.
