Review of The Petrified Forest (1936) by Laura N — 09 Jun 2009
Humphrey Bogart's big break. And you can see why. Warner started him off playing villians and he's just so GOOD at it. Leslie Howard, although not one of my favorite actors, does a respectful job as Alan Sharpe, a man who's wasted his talent in ambitionless drifting though life.
..now literally drifting through the United States. Bette Davis does a decent job as Gabby, a young girl with big dreams stuck in a desolate landscape. However, I have seen her do an amazing job in Jezebel and other films, so don't judge her solely on this film.
Frankly, it's the story that is the best part of this film. A story of redemption and sacrifice.
