Review of The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) by Georgia S — 17 Oct 2013
I really wanted to like this but the plot felt very stereotypical and the twists really weren't. I felt like I was hanging out with people from high school again that, even then, I could see seemed to knowingly make poor decisions that lead to unhappiness then sit around lamenting it like it was art.
I found those characters exhausting and overbearing then and in this movie too. Too bad because I really like Emma Watson and Mae Whitman was adorable and sold her role very well. In fact, the acting of the whole 'gang' was quite well done but the actual characters they portrayed, the script, and plot left so much to be desired.
The most personal revelation for the main character is accurately awkward and 'triggered' but it's not set up well for the audience to the point where I was the only one in my group watching who understood what happened without clarification.
Plus, his character has such a confusing mess of problems that what the audience is supposed to be focusing on at a given point is unclear.
