Review of The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) by Alex M — 13 Dec 2014
This is a fine adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's novel, and part of that is because Stephen Chbosky himself directed this movie. However, that's not the only reason why.
The main reason why this movie works are the performances. Logan Lerman is phenomenal as Charlie, a high school freshman who's dealing with a lot of issues, which provide several of the film's comedic and heartbreaking moments. Emma Watson and Ezra Miller are also phenomenal as Sam and Patrick, a pair of seniors who happen to be stepsiblings and take him under their wing and make him part of their inner circle. Seeing them perform musical segments of The Rocky Horror Picture Show while the movie plays behind them is just magic!!
Watson's performance here shows she is more than just Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter films, and her American accent is quite nice. Ezra Miller also shows just how much great range he has, as his role here is the complete opposite of We Need To Talk About Kevin. And while I didn't necessarily go through the same things as a teenager that Charlie, Sam and Patrick go through, I do remember the whole stage of trying to find and be yourself, which is what this movie is aiming to be about. It succeeds magnificently. 10/10.
