Review of The Perfect Host (2010) by Björn C — 30 Nov 2011
What starts out as an intriguingly unsettling spin on an 'Extremities'-like plot sluggishly becomes a twist-happy flight, realizing too late that returning to solid ground is essential to accordingly wrap everything up.
David Hyde Pierce takes his bent role of Warwick to heights far beyond where the movie could possibly hope to reach - every scene after his involvement that doesn't involve him feels draining and hollow.
The third act tries to reward viewers who made an effort to give a damn about these cutaway scenes with the ending they deserve, but the persistence to allow the off-kilter vibe of the set-in-stone action locale - Warwick's house - to permeate through comes off as a frantic effort to save the story.
Fans of Pierce won't be disappointed in his fun, demented, well-calculated, over-the-top turn, but they will wish it could have come with a film that deserved the superb execution.
