Review of The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) by Ian M — 08 Jan 2010
Most people agree that Woody Harrelson and Edward Norton are strong here, but a lot of folk still can't acknowledge what an excellent performance Courtney Love gives too. The whole "She's just playing herself" argument is glib, reductive and plain stupid - what she does in this film is intuitively great acting.
The People vs. Larry Flynt makes for unreliable biography because of the way Forman's direction clearly marshalls the viewer towards his own sympathy for misfits, but as film entertainment it's funny, sad, and very romantic.
That'll do me.
