Review of The People Under the Stairs (1991) by Eric P — 22 Mar 2008
Congratulations to Wes Craven and friends for making a horror film with the same level of sophistication as Casper and The Sandlot.
Will someone please explain to me what the deal is with the Home Alone-style slapstick gags, and the Casper-style oohs and ahhs that 9-year-olds would get from magic revolving doors? This is a kid's movie that's rated R because of blood and gore. In fact, I have no doubt that I would have enjoyed this more as a 9-year-old.
Craven seems content to steal from David Lynch and Sam Raimi's playbooks, and indeed I think the most redeeming aspect of the film is the sight of Everett McGill, which constantly made me long for some Twin Peaks.
