Review of The People Under the Stairs (1991) by Eric R — 17 Aug 2011
After learning that his family is going to be evicted and his mother is sick, a young African American teenager, Fool, breaks into the house of his wealthy landlords because he has heard rumors of them stashing gold coins.
What he doesn't know is that his landlords are actually incestuous psychopathic siblings who keep a stash of young kidnapped boys in the basement, there eyes, eyes and tongues ripped out. People Under the Stairs is a rather mediocre effort by Wes Craven.
The attempt at a social commentary on social responsibility in the community is rather laughable considering it is surrounded by a rather hokie, not very scary film. Everett McGill and Wendy Robie, who play the homicidal siblings, are the only real reason to see this film.
They play batshit insane well, with the perfect mixture of creepy and insane to the point of it almost coming off as comical; which isn't a bad thing.
