Review of The People Under the Stairs (1991) by Nathan A — 03 Jan 2011
Sometimes in life, you really wonder whats wrong with everybody else, do they just not see how great some movies really are? I wonder this alot when it comes to Horror films, so many people seem to love the really popular ones and that's fine. But come on, it's Horror, the gritty more cult ones are usually always better. Actually some of the most pissed on ones, you know, the ones that are considered bad, are actually the freakin best.
People Under The Stairs fits into what I saying perfectly, because it just might be the most underrated movie I've ever seen. I love this movie so much, that I consider it a top 12 favorite, yes, call me nuts but you can go screw yourself. I don't care, everytime this movie is on TV I watch it, I even own it on dvd and still watch it on cable. Actually I've even got done watching the dvd before and turn on my cable and found it on there, and preceded to watch it again. I've love this movie since I was 13 and I've loved it ever since.
Now, People Under The Stairs is about a boy named Fool(Brandon Quincy Adams), who is tring to steal a coin collection from his Landlords. He needs this money for his mother's operation and to pay the rent. His Landlords are two of the craziest people ever put on screen, Mommy (Wendy Robie) and Daddy (Everett McGill).
Who live in a old funeral home in the rich side of the neighborhood. It has been told through the years that this family is seriously deranged and has a family treasure within the old house. So Fool, Spencer, and Leroy (Ving Rhames) decide to break in and steal this treasure. Before this movie is though you realise that this family has alot of secrets, that were best left alone.
This movie to me, is highly entertaining and fun. It's even funny and really scary at the same time. Well now, I've seen it so many times, I see every thing coming. But when I was younger it was a different story. Alot people don't know but Wes Craven based this on a true story, about two whacked out parents that abused children and put them into the cellar, which they remained there and weren't allowed to leave. To me theres nothing scarier than abusive, fucked up parents, that's what makes this a great Horror film.
So I recommend this film very highly, and I'm kinda getting impatient about the Blu Ray. When the hell is it coming out? I need this now! Well guess I gotta wait, hell I'm still waiting for SubUrbia to be released on freakin DVD. What's wrong with these people? Hurry Up! And kid's always remember, there's always some house in your neighborhood, that you should cross the street and try to avoid haha.
