Review of The Peanuts Movie (2015) by Ben L — 08 Dec 2015
There aren't words to express how reluctant I was to go see this movie. I have a deep love for the original Charles Schulz comic strips and holiday specials, so I did not want to see that tarnished by some modern update of the classics.
What genuinely shocked me when I started watching is that this movie is not modern at all. It is 100% a nostalgic throwback to the style of the originals I know and love (Snoopy is even still using a typewriter, in a movie made in 2015.
) The characters all were just as you remember them, and it is even paced a bit slower and more methodical like the old TV specials (which might be why the detractors on this film find it boring.) You'll see several of the iconic images from the old comic strips, and even some familiar quotes as well.
I chuckled quite a lot throughout the film, because the humorous situations were things I could totally relate to as I went through similar struggles as a child. I also liked the unique blend of the classic art style with this new three-dimensional look added to it.
There was one really awkward cut in the movie where it suddenly fast-forwards in time, which I could not stand. It was a startlingly awkward transition that didn't work as I think they intended. Yet, despite a minor quibble like that, I was quite pleased by The Peanuts Movie.
It was like a warm hug from my childhood that made me deeply nostalgic. I'd definitely recommend it for everyone who loves the classic Peanuts cartoons.
