Review of The Peanuts Movie (2015) by Martin I — 18 Dec 2015
There's always a dilemma when old classics are given a fresh take on the big screen: they are either too nostalgic or they try too hard and end up losing the original charm.
The Peanuts Movie manages to avoid both these problems, instead finding a wonderful balance of sweet nostalgia and fresh energy that comes together in an utterly charming movie.
The story is simple enough (I'm not sure what some people might be expecting ?), yet the direction and breezy plot allows the film to flow as if flipping through a collection of the old comic strips. It's a massive feather in the cap of those who brought this production together.
The sight gags are funny, the characters are sweet and likeable as always and there's just enough of the self-aware Charlie Brown's pondering to keep adult fans entertained.
Treated with the highest respect, Charles M. Shulz's original work truly is delivered with new vibrancy. It'll be a kid's favourite and Christmas classic for years to come.
Very, very good ("grief"). 4 stars.
