Review of The Pawnbroker (1965) by Raül J — 26 Jun 2009
Gritty, depressing, merciless and amazing film. Sol Nazerman is an incredible character, brilliantly performed by Steiger, that carries you through his terrible journey of desolation and suppresion of emotion.
"Everything I loved was taken away from me..... and I didn't die". That's devastating, and resumes perfectly this miserable life of a "walking dead", perfectly showed to us by Lumet.
Some minor issues, as the music (terrible choice at the end), some of the supporting cast roles, a bit forced imo, or the hard-to-believe innocence of Sol about where does "the money" come from brings down the movie a bit.
Nevertheless an incredible moving and touching movie, not to be missed. Excellent. Searching the book from now on too.
