Review of The Patriot (2000) by Peter B — 29 Aug 2010
This is not really concernrd with historical accuracy-mainly its a revengey/action/wannabe epic. Its pretty melodramatic-with pounding music as volunteers stand up in church to go to war!! Its way too long and does not deal with subtlty.
Buuut there are times when you wish it could be trimmed a bit and the rough edges smoothed out because it really does come close to greatness now and then. Gibson is brilyant in it-its william wallace but feels a bit different-and he and heath ledger have a terrific chemistry.
There are some nice moments of humour and a few of the action scenes-especially gibsons rescue of ledger near the start-are really well done. Its good dumb fun on one hand and a flawed film that coulda been better on the other.
Either way its good when its good and it drags when its not.
