Review of The Patriot (2000) by Brett D — 12 Dec 2010
What starts as a promising historical fiction tale devolves into the standard one man out for vengeance ploy, which hurts a film that otherwise is blessed with great performances by Gibson and Ledger, and high production values that regard the time period with reverance and respect, even for the British figures.
Several depictions are off base, not the least of which being the portrayals of how black people were treated in South Carolina at the time. Good, with great drama and epic overtones, but just falls short.
