Review of The Patriot (2000) by Sarfaraz A — 13 Oct 2011
Once one of my favourite films that opinion slightly changed in the process of my more serious film studies.
It's still an excellent epic though, with lots of blood, tears and melodrama.
The Patriot is just a big stunning epic and I think what they did best is the casting which is flawless (Gibson has the best over-the-top crying face ever - and he uses it a lot; Jason Isaacs is great as well and all the minor roles are still casted great: Chris Cooper, Tom Wilkinson, Heath Ledger, Gregory Smith, Tcheky Karyo) just followed by the epic cinematography.
Storywise the film is neither unique nor really demanding or sophisticated but it gives you more than you expect from an everyday blockbuster.
As already mentioned The Patriot is at its best when they're going to battle - from the infamous slaughter scene to the battle of Yorktown - GREAT!
Action, gunpowder and many many tears (most of them by Mr Gibson himself) - best Emmerich by far.
