Review of The Patriot (2000) by Brian S — 08 Apr 2012
Not overly engaging, at least as a drama. the personal stories of individual characters are pretty meager, and the Martin family just sort of exists as a plot device. the historical accuracy is also incredibly shaky, which is a shame considering the apparent lack of war movies about the Revolution.
that being said, however, the war element in this movie is pretty good--the graphic battle sequences, the strategy, the atmosphere, etc. it's all very cinematic and enjoyable. the climax battle is particularly cinematic and heroic with its slow motion fighting and surging John Williams score.
the last scene of the family coming home is nice too, although it would have been more effective if characters and relationships had been better developed. overall good, but not great.
