Review of The Passion of the Christ (2004) by Erik G — 25 Jan 2012
In an event that shaped the history of Christianity forever, the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ are dramatically represented in one epic tale. You know the part of the Bible where Jesus was betrayed by Judas, tortured, and crucified to death by the Romans? That's it - that's all of it.
I see the film as a good Biblical interpretation of the event, and I find it moving, too. The bloody torture is at all graphically, shockingly real, and strongly enough to remind me of the horror flicks.
But this is 'The Passion Of The Christ' - and not 'Freddy vs. Judas' - that I'm talking about: Mel Gibson, born of his strong Roman Catholic faith, directed this as to perfectly portray Christ's crucifixion.
Even with the concerns that it would stir up antisemitism due to the portrayal of the Jews, the movie did well on the box office (a $370 million gross!) and gave Mel a provocative new celebrity reputation.
