I think the point Mel Gibson is trying to make is obvious. He's trying to show the pain & suffering he believes Jesus Christ went through for us. It's no surprise this film hasn't been received well because it was made by someone who actually believes its message.
If Pasolini makes a film about Christ it's a masterpiece. Any how, Passion of the Christ is challenging & courageous.
