Review of The Party (1968) by Alexandre X — 28 Dec 2007
One of Peter Sellers' best films during his career; I found 'The Party' to be a great comedy that is unique and thoroughly enjoyable. An Indian movie star named Hrundi V. Bakshi (Sellers) accidentally detonates explosives and destroys an entire film set just seconds before the explosives were supposed to be set off.
The director then makes an effort to ensure Hrundi never works again, and calls the studio manager to get him on the black list. Instead he is inadvertently put onto the A-List, and is invited to a high profile party.
While present at the party he causes major catastrophes as the film moves from one great gag to the next. Sellers, as always, is a total delight and delivers a convincing performance as a bumbling, clumsy Indian.
It's a shame the gags don't hold up until the ending, but there are enough clever and utterly hilarious gags here to satisfy anyone. 'The Party' is an extremely funny fish-out-of-water comedy.
It has a decent mix of sight gags as well as physical gags with great performances to boot. Relax, enjoy, and have a great laugh.
