Review of The Parallax View (1974) by Richard W — 02 Jul 2011
The Parallax View is a perfect example of why I'm addicted to 70s cinema. Pakula's direction is flawless. He tells the story visually, never pandering to the audience with expository dialogue. The camerawork and editing are executed to make the viewer feel disoriented to the scene.
Even the locations are used to create a sterile form of visual tension. As a graphic designer, it's hard not to notice the repeated use of structural grids and angular patterns in many of the shots.
None of this is done by accident. Pakula was using all the tools he had available to create a conspiracy thriller that forces the audience to experience two hours of paranoia.
