Review of The Paperboy (2012) by Ana B — 07 Oct 2013
Epic movie portraying the love story between Jack, a young lad that delivers his father's newspapers, with Charlotte Bless, a mature but very attractive woman that is trying to rescue her boyfriend from death row with the help of Jack's journalist brother, Ward, and his black friend Yardley.
It is a crossover of genres, part family drama, part thriller with "noir" touches, part romance, part courtroom film, all satisfactorily mix in this picture full of colour and sweaty characters badly copying with a heat wave in a racially troubled Florida during the 60s.
I liked the sordid story, the recreation of the historical time and especially the impersonation of Charlotte by a very inspired Kidman; from the Southern accent to the colourful attires, from the elaborated hair dos to the sexually charged scenes she manages to steal the film with her "savoir faire". This is not to discredit the rest of the cast that did well too, but she actually exceeded in her portraying of Miss Bless.
A good Hollywood film with a few shocking and shady scenes too, I am surprised it received such poor reviews, it is actually interesting and entertaining at the same time.
