Review of The Paperboy (2012) by Mick T — 08 Feb 2013
Strange, sordid followup to director Lee Daniels' PRECIOUS is an admittedly steamy melodrama dripping with period atmosphere and orgasmic performances (most notably Nicole Kidman). The sight of Zac Efron parading around in his underwear is going to turn away a lot of male viewers, though the settings give his character an excuse, if only to please the female viewers.
Regardless, the film isn't boring in the slightest, although this is certainly not for the squeamish or deeply religious. Depending on your reaction to all the campy and crazy goings-on, you may not want to go so far as checking out Pete Dexter's novel, as the author himself co-wrote the screenplay with Daniels.
