Review of The Paper (1994) by Stephen M — 01 May 2008
The Paper is film making at its very best. Ron Howard has proven time and time again that he is a brilliant director - and even though there are films he has made that are more famous, more popular and more lauded (the Oscar for Beautiful Mind..ok..), The Paper is actually MY household's favourite Ron Howard movie.
This film is so fast paced, so smart, so funny, it is impossible not to fall in love with it. It is uncompromising in its insistence that you keep up with it and the cast gets right on Howard's band wagon.
And what a cast!
Everyone knows what a freakin genius Glenn Close is and we all love her AND her genius; but I'm afraid people have forgotten what a genius Michael Keaton is - and even though he is better loved for movies like Batman and Beetlejuice, I actually think this is his most compelling character AND performance. Marisa Tomei is another one: people love My Cousin Vinnie and she got an Oscar nom for In The Bedroom but check out her subtle comic timing in The Paper! As if it weren't enough to have these three, there are beautiful..BEAUTIFUL..performances from Robert Duvall (and Jill Hennessey in a small role as his estranged daughter), Randy Quaid, Jason Robards (so laid back and bitingly funny), Jason Alexander, Catherine O'Hara (HI LAR I OUS) and Alfre Woodard ("I have no motive for lying").
They are all simply marvelous.
It would be remis of me to not mention the extraordinary backdrop of New York City, the best city in the world.
MWAHVELOUS.
