Review of The Palm Beach Story (1942) by Masorad ( — 16 Dec 2008
Superlative Sturges fare that dances around the Hays Code with dialogue that nudges and winks. Colbert and Astor are blissfully over-the-top, while McCrea and a rather wooden Rudy Vallee dutifully straight-man themselves in order to advance the plot.
The "screwball" elements here are inspired: The Ale and Quail Club, the Weenie King, Toto, the opening and the split screen finale. Bill Demarest given a smaller role in this one, but his screen time is well spent.
