Review of The Painted Veil (2006) by Davey M — 19 Feb 2009
It has the same lack of humor and self-important earnestness that afflicts a lot of period pieces, but it's also a very moving and mature love story. Norton and Watts are very good, and the photography is very beautiful.
It drags in places, but it's a fine story of love, service, and redemption--"when love and duty are one, then grace is within you." That's sort of tidy, but it's also pretty profoundly true.
Lovely use of Satie as well.
