Review of The Painted Veil (2006) by Tarun R — 22 Mar 2009
Yet another attempt at the white-Europeans-exorcising-personal-demons-in-a-foreign-locale theme. This time it's cuckolded bacteriologist dragging his hapless & unfaithful wife into a cholera epidemic somewhere on the Lijiang River.
The film boasts strong performances and is postcard-pretty, but its flat pacing & unapologetic period mannerisms improve little on the 1934 Garbo vehicle. Both Norton and Watts listed as producers incline one to believe this was a vanity project.
