Review of The Painted Veil (2006) by Elisa82 — 14 Apr 2009
When I saw this movie on the shelf at Blockbuster, I hadn't heard anything about it or looked it up when I got home with it. I just popped it into the DVD player and started watching. I have to say that I watched the movie a number of times before I took it back to Blockbuster.
There was something about the story that touched me in a way. I don't know if touched is the right word, but it's the best one to describe why I liked it so much. The story kinda goes like this: Woman met and marries a man she doesn't love, has an affair, he punishes his wife for the affair by taking her into the middle of a cholera epidemic in 1920's China.
The couple experience many new and terrible things together only to find out that they have true feelings for each otherâ?¦ *Spoiler hereâ?¦. If you don't want to know don't read further* â?¦ and once it looks like they are about to have a happy ending, the husband dies.
Norton gives an excellent performance. I have to say that this is one of my favorite movies of his. Naomi Watts is also in this film, and I can't say I've seen enough of her work to be able to give an evaluation on her performance really.
In the film, she did a good job of playing a young woman in a relationship she doesn't want to be in. Nortonâ?¦ excellent work as the socially inept doctor who knows how to break down diseases.
