Review of The Painted Veil (2006) by Noah E — 24 Jan 2011
Though both leads play stunning parts that are very well acted, the overall lack of plot development in the central romance story makes for a film that just seems to drag its feet. The setting and cinematography were beautiful and portrayed well and the overall atmosphere of the film was well executed.
The main plot, however, offered little development to the love story between Watts and Norton. Just as the two estranged lovers begin to reconcile their differences and are drawn back together, the films ends abruptly.
The anti-British sentiment is shown so little that one can easily forget about what is supposed to be one of the main antagonists in the film. This film really works better as a visual piece and not one based on the characters, their interactions, or their adversity.
This love story just didn't have enough love in it to make it an emotionally gripping film.
