Review of The Painted Veil (2006) by Danny C — 15 May 2011
'The Painted Veil' is a metaphor for how we often fall in love with a fantasy of who we want someone to be, instead of seeing them for all their flaws and personal trials. Norton and Watts portray an English couple trapped within the spite and bitterness of a loveless marriage, set against the equally tumultuous backdrop of 1920s-China during a devastating cholera epidemic and political unrest.
When the facade is lifted, they start to see each other for who they really are, and fondness and genuine respect grows between them. The film is sweeping, picturesque, and human.
