Review of The Painted Veil (2006) by Niek S — 04 Jun 2011
The most glaring problem with The Painted Veil is the translation from the source material. Sometimes writers make the mistake of trying to cram so much of the detail of a novel into a film that the most basic elements (like character development) are lost in trying to "be faithful to the material".
This is the case here. As slow of a movie as this is, everything still seems rushed, and it makes it hard for me to care about what happens to these people. As for the rest, its a mixed bag. The cinematography is beautiful, Ed Norton may be the most talented actor working today, and Naomi Watts is effortlessly charming.
I like Liev Schreiber, but he somehow seems out of place here. Toby Jones always creeps me out, though he's not supposed in this film. He's just a strange little man. So... there you have it.
