Review of The Painted Veil (2006) by Pablo E — 09 Mar 2013
Visually stunning film set in 1920's rural China with compelling nuanced performances from Naomi Watts and Ed Norton. What starts as a marriage of convenience to her and infatuation for him in England, turns to contempt when he learns of her affair during his tour in Shanghai. After he leaves her no choice but to move with him to rural China to fight the spread of cholera, they eventually fall in love as they learn to recognize each other's generosity and selflessness in their quest to help those affected by the disease.
This remake differs from others of The Painted Veil in its depiction of heartbreak and pain, and an ending that is decidedly Hollywood in spite of its attempt at departing from the original. Nevertheless, this is a lovely executed story about the redeeming power of love. Loved it.... My heart still aches.
