Review of The Pacifier (2005) by Manny C — 11 Apr 2011
How apt that Vin Diesel stars in a movie in which he's changing and emptying diapers, because that's pretty much what he does to unsuspecting audiences everytime he does a movie (XXX anyone? A Man Apart? Chronicles of Riddick?) Here he trades in the gritty action route to go all Arnold a la Kindergarten Cop.
Diesel is Shane Wolfe, a Navy commando who is tasked with guarding five children, plus their pet duck, and protect them from villains who inexplicably don't use guns. Actually that's not so inexplicable--it's a PG Disney movie. The script, from Reno 911 guys Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant, is nothing more than a gaggle of poop jokes, and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House) Disney-fies Vin Diesel to no end.
Hard to believe this is the same guy who once showed promise in films like Saving Private Ryan and Boiler Room. He even had sparks of genuine talent in the so-so Pitch Black and the tepid The Fast and The Furious. The Pacifier, meanwhile, is just crap in a diaper.
