Review of The Overnight (2015) by Michael M — 04 Aug 2016
This movie surprised me. It's not great, but it comes close and it's certainly better than I expected. The set up led me to think it was some quirky comedy about swingers, but it's really not. Kind of. Not really. The film's very short (barely more than an hour) and simple, showing a pair of married couples having a rather strange night. The chemistry between the leads is definitely the highlight of the film, especially between Adam Scott and Jason Schwartzman who really elevate the whole experience. It's not exactly a laugh riot, but there are a lot of awkward laughs to be had. The comedy is pretty unpredictable, and most of the jokes caught me off guard.
The movie eventually goes into a direction that I really didn't see coming, and at first I was really impressed by. Looking back on the experience though, I realize that the ultimate message behind the movie and it's concluding note is something I've definitely seen many times before. Even so, the film is enjoyable enough. A quirky little sex comedy that feels familiar but is still different enough. I liked the leads, and I liked the idea of doing a sex comedy about adults rather than teenagers. If you like indie comedies and especially if you like the lead actors, it's worth checking out. It's only 70 minutes long, so really what do you have to lose?
