Review of The Outsiders (1983) by Will S — 27 Apr 2013
An extremely underrated movie! One of the best film adaptations of one of my favorite books. Francis Ford Coppola hasn't done this well since "The Godfather Part II." The acting from Howell, Macchio, and Dillon is incredible.
This is coming from me who isn't a big fan of Matt Dillon. This movie changed my mind. Macchio was much better in this than in "The Karate Kid!" This movie includes great supporting actors such as Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe.
The directing is great and the extended one is even better! The 50s/60s music fits in great. This movie takes the story of the book and makes a complete copy and pastes it on film. When I read this years ago I swear the church is exactly how I visualized it.
Stevie Wonder's "Stay Gold" is a nice touch for the end. Some one liners are remembered as well. Such as: "Stay Gold Ponyboy! Stay Gold...", "Nothing Gold can stay", "Ain't nobody starting a rumble without me!" and "We'll do it for Johnny man! Do it for Johnny!".
All in all, this movie is great, not just great but best picture great. Too bad some people just don't get it these days.
